75% of malware is sent by email!

HP has released its latest global Threat Insights Report, which analyzes cybersecurity attacks and vulnerabilities. Research shows a 65 percent increase in the use of cyberattack tools downloaded from file sharing websites from the second half of 2020 to the first half of 2021. Researchers say cyberattack tools with large circulation have many features. For example, captcha can solve difficulties by using computer vision techniques such as optical character recognition (OCR) to carry out credential-filling attacks against websites. 75 percent of the detected malware was sent by email, while the remaining 25 percent was browsers increased by 24 percent due to users downloading cyberattack tools and cryptocurrency mining software, albeit indirectly.

NEWS OF THE MONTH

According to Kaspersky ICS CERT, almost one in three industrial computers were exposed to malicious activity in the first half of 2021.

Kaspersky said cybercriminals used a variety of spyware types and malicious scripts in the first half to carry out their attacks. Such threats grow in the second 6-month period and pose a major challenge for industrial control systems (ICS).

Attacks on industrial enterprises where cybercriminals can steal data and money and disrupt the established manufacturing system pose a particular danger. The increase in the variety of threats to such networks indicates that attackers’ interest in them has increased and as a result, the need to protect them reliably increases.

TIP OF THE MONTH

Precautions to protect your mobile device from harmful applications:

  1. Download apps only from official app stores to your phone. Avoid installing apps sent as links through messaging platforms because of the possibility of compromise.
  2. Install operating system updates and security patches promptly when they become available. If you're planning to travel abroad for a holiday or business trip, ensure your device is fully patched before leaving home. Note that most mobiles may not download major updates via 4G, especially when connected to a foreign network.
  3. Set up a PIN or pattern-based lock screen to prevent unauthorized physical access to your device.
  4. Regularly check which apps have device manager privileges on your phone and adjust your security settings if needed.
